I read this in the Utne. It's in an article by Frances Moore Lappe and Jeffrey Perkins; a story about reinterpreting fear as a source of energy.

They tell the true story of Timothy Njoya, a Presbyterian pastor in Nairobi, Kenya. He had criticized the government (a dictatorship) for years and had been repeatedly threatened. One night, seven armed assailants came to his door. They slashed off his fingers and sliced his belly open. As he lay on the floor, thinking he was dying, he started to give his attackers his most treasured belongings. This moved his assailants so much that they rushed him to the hospital to save him.
